Join us for a traditional “Beaufort social”—a quintessential Southern experience. Here, you’ll rub elbows with your neighbors—and perhaps even swing them around while dancing the Virginia Reel. As you cycle the famous Intercoastal Waterway and Spanish Moss trails, you’ll explore local culture from many perspectives—including a visit to Fort Moultrie, where Edgar Allen Poe was once stationed, a picnic at historic Fripp Plantation, and a guided tour of the Penn Center—the first Southern school dedicated to the education of former slaves. Some 30 miles north of Hilton Head Island, Beaufort is an old seaport with narrow streets shaded by huge live oaks and lined with 18th-century homes. This was the second area in North America to be discovered by the Spanish (1520), the site of the first fort on the continent (1525), and the first attempted settlement (1562).
Beaufort has been used as a setting for several films, including The Big Chill. Scenes from the Paramount blockbuster Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks, and The Prince of Tides were also shot here.
